Otoplasty: Confidence and Facial Harmony
Prominent ears are one of the few physical characteristics that can have a disproportionate impact on self-esteem, especially during childhood and adolescence. A feature that represents no medical problem from a functional standpoint can become, in a child's social environment, a source of insecurity. Otoplasty is a surgery that corrects this congenital malformation and, in doing so, restores the confidence that a physical trait should never have taken away.
The Emotional Impact of Prominent Ears
Protruding ears result from an alteration in the folding of the auricular cartilage during development. They are not the result of habits or carelessness — they simply occur. What often does occur as a consequence is the psychological suffering of those who have them. For this reason, when parents consult me about their children, I usually recommend considering surgery from the age of 5 to 6 years — when the cartilages are fully developed — to prevent that emotional burden from accompanying the child through their formative years.
What Should a Patient Expect?
Otoplasty takes approximately 2 hours. In children it is performed under general anesthesia; in adolescents and adults, local anesthesia may be used. Incisions are placed at the back of the ear, where they are imperceptible. After surgery, a protective bandage is worn for the first few days. Recovery for school or work activities is 5 to 10 days, and for contact sports 3 to 4 weeks. Complications are uncommon and generally minor.
My Approach as a Surgeon
There are multiple surgical techniques for otoplasty, and the choice depends on the specific anatomy of each patient's cartilage. My goal is always to achieve ears that look natural, symmetrical, and proportional to the face — not ears that appear artificially pinned to the skull. The initial consultation includes a detailed conversation with the parents or adult patient about expectations, possible results, and the recovery process, so that the decision is made with full information.
Conclusion
Otoplasty is one of the procedures with the greatest impact on quality of life relative to its technical complexity. The change is not only physical: it is the possibility of growing up — or living — without that point of vulnerability a physical trait can represent. If you or your child have prominent ears and wish to explore this option, I invite you to schedule a consultation to discuss the case calmly and evaluate it together.
