Breast Reduction: A Life-Changing Procedure

Breast reduction is, in my experience, one of the surgical procedures with the greatest impact on the quality of life of the patients who undergo it. And not only in aesthetic terms. Women with macromastia — very large breasts — live daily with chronic neck, shoulder, and back pain; difficulty finding appropriate clothing; real limitations in practicing sports; and an emotional impact that is frequently underestimated. Breast reduction surgery transforms all of this.

Beyond Aesthetics: The Functional Impact

The weight of excessively large breasts creates a constant mechanical load on the cervical and dorsal spine. It is common to find patients who have already gone through months of physiotherapy, massage, and analgesics without obtaining lasting relief, because the origin of the problem — the weight on the chest — has not been addressed. Add to this the skin irritation in the folds, difficulty sleeping comfortably, and the impact on self-esteem. When a patient describes how breast reduction allowed her to run for the first time in years, I understand that this procedure goes far beyond aesthetics.

What Should a Patient Expect?

The surgery lasts 2 to 4 hours and generally does not require hospitalization. Excess breast tissue is removed and the breast is reshaped, with simultaneous lifting of the areola-nipple complex. Scars are designed following the areola contour and a vertical inferior line, so they remain within the natural folds. Work recovery is 5 to 7 days; for sports activities, 3 to 4 weeks. Wearing a medical bra during the first weeks is part of post-operative care.

My Approach as a Surgeon

In the preoperative evaluation, I analyze the size and position of the areola-nipple complex, skin quality, and each patient's volume expectations. The surgical technique is selected on an individualized basis. My goal is to achieve a smaller, lifted, harmoniously shaped breast that improves both the patient's aesthetic appearance and physical well-being. Clear information about scars, recovery time, and realistic outcome expectations is part of every initial consultation.

Conclusion

Breast reduction is much more than an aesthetic surgery: it is a decision about health and quality of life. The changes it produces — pain relief, greater mobility, improvement in emotional well-being — are transformative. If your breast volume is limiting your daily life or causing physical discomfort, I invite you to schedule a consultation to explore together whether this is the solution you are looking for.
