HYALURONIC ACID (FACIAL FILLERS)
In certain cases, deep wrinkles and folds require the application of liquid or gel-based facial fillers such as hyaluronic acid. These fillers are also used to add volume to the lips, chin, cheekbones, and to restore facial contours safely, due to their compatibility with the human body.
This substance is found in almost all living organisms. In humans, it acts as a network that transfers essential nutrients from the bloodstream to skin cells.
It is a natural substance found in high concentrations in soft connective tissues, cartilage, joints, and skin.
When this gel is injected, it acts by supporting facial structures and tissues that may have lost volume or elasticity due to normal aging. It has a beneficial effect by providing greater hydration.
This type of treatment will help improve your facial appearance, but it is not a permanent solution — the substance is ultimately absorbed by the body within 12 to 18 months and will not stop the aging process.
Most people tolerate hyaluronic acid injectable therapy without irritation or complications. No allergy testing is needed, and it is injected into the skin integrating naturally without producing fibrosis. For this reason, it has the approval of all global scientific societies, including the FDA.
Some commercial names include: Captique, Esthélis, Elevess, Hylaform, Juvéderm, Perlane, Prevelle, Puragen, Restylane, Volift, Voluma, and Volbella.
Consultation Process
During your appointment I will evaluate your areas of volume loss and assess your facial dynamics to design a treatment plan. We will review examples of results with different product amounts and discuss which specific hyaluronic acid product is most suitable for your goals — different formulas have varying densities and viscosities suited to different applications. I will explain that results are not permanent and that future sessions can be adjusted based on how you respond.
Treatment Areas
In addition to the face, hyaluronic acid can be applied to other areas such as the back of the hands to restore lost volume, and the neck and décolletage to improve skin texture and elasticity.
The Procedure
Hyaluronic acid application is an outpatient procedure that generally takes between 15 and 30 minutes. Very fine needles or cannulas are used, and in many cases the product contains integrated lidocaine for greater patient comfort during treatment.
I inject the hyaluronic acid into subdermal layers, continuously evaluating volume and shape to achieve a symmetrical and natural result. The product integrates into the tissues almost immediately.
Results Timeline
Immediately: Results are visible right after injection, though mild swelling may be present initially.
Days 1–2: Mild swelling subsides. The true result becomes fully visible.
Week 1: Optimal result — the lips or treated areas look smooth, natural, and voluminous. Any residual swelling has resolved.
Weeks 2–3: The hyaluronic acid integrates more deeply into the tissues and the result looks increasingly natural.
Months 1–12: The hyaluronic acid is gradually reabsorbed by the body. Some patients begin to notice a slight decrease in effect after 6 months.
Months 12–18: Most of the product has been reabsorbed. A follow-up treatment may be desired to maintain the result.
Duration
Duration varies by product and location — typically 6 to 18 months. Lips tend to last less (6–9 months) because constant movement accelerates reabsorption. Cheeks and mid-face typically last longer (12–18 months).
Post-Treatment Care
After treatment, avoid direct sun exposure for the first 48 hours, refrain from intense exercise for 24 hours, and avoid manipulating or massaging the treated area. Applying cold compresses can help minimize any mild swelling that may occur in the first few hours.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the injection hurt?
Discomfort is minimal. With topical numbing cream applied before treatment and the integrated anesthetic in most products, the procedure is very well tolerated by the vast majority of patients.
Are hyaluronic acid fillers permanent?
No — they are biodegradable. The body naturally reabsorbs them over 6 to 18 months. This is actually an advantage: results can be adjusted or discontinued without any permanent changes.
Can I combine hyaluronic acid with botulinum toxin?
Yes — these treatments complement each other very well. Botulinum toxin relaxes the muscles that create dynamic lines, while hyaluronic acid restores lost volume and smooths static lines that are present even at rest.
Will I see results immediately?
Yes — results are visible right after injection, although mild temporary swelling can affect the final appearance for 24 to 48 hours.
Are there any side effects?
Mild bruising is possible but uncommon. Mild swelling typically resolves within 24–48 hours. Avoiding blood-thinning medications like aspirin before treatment helps minimize bruising.
Why Choose Me?
With extensive experience in aesthetic medicine, I have performed hyaluronic acid treatments with consistently excellent outcomes. My patients appreciate that I focus on enhancing their natural features rather than creating dramatic changes. I use only established, high-quality brands such as Juvéderm and Restylane for consistent, predictable results.
