Abdominoplasty: Safely Reclaiming Your Figure

Pregnancy is one of the most transformative experiences in a woman's life, and it brings physical changes that go far beyond what exercise can resolve. Abdominal skin that loses its elasticity, muscles separated by diastasis recti, stretch marks that mark the abdomen — all of this can persist years after delivery, no matter how much effort is dedicated at the gym. Abdominoplasty is the surgical answer to those changes that time and exercise cannot repair.

The Abdomen After Pregnancy and Weight Changes

The separation of the rectus abdominal muscles — known as diastasis recti — is one of the most frequent problems following pregnancy. It creates an abdominal prominence that does not disappear with exercise and that, in many cases, can cause back pain or functional difficulty. Combined with excess skin and the presence of infraumbilical stretch marks, the picture is one that no exercise routine is designed to solve. Abdominoplasty addresses all of these aspects in a single procedure.

What Should a Patient Expect?

The surgery lasts 2 to 3 hours under general anesthesia and requires one night of hospitalization. The incision is designed in the lower abdomen, within the underwear margin, so it can remain concealed. Post-operative care includes analgesics, antibiotics, and early mobilization to reduce risks. Work incapacity is typically 10 days; sports activities can be resumed after 3 to 4 weeks. This surgery is not recommended for patients planning future pregnancies.

My Approach as a Surgeon

I conceive of abdominoplasty within the concept of "circular torso management": it is not enough to operate on the abdomen if the flanks and posterior waist are not also addressed. For this reason, I frequently combine abdominoplasty with liposculpture of the flanks to achieve a harmonious, proportional result. Abdominal muscle reconstruction is an integral part of the procedure in most cases. I am especially rigorous with safety criteria — surgical times, smoking history, medical conditions — because in this type of surgery, complication prevention is just as important as the technique itself.

Conclusion

Abdominoplasty can restore not only a firmer, more defined figure, but also the physical comfort and confidence that many women feel they lost after pregnancy. If you identify with any of the changes described and want to know whether you are a candidate for this procedure, I invite you to schedule a consultation where we will evaluate your case together in detail.
